Nightwish is Finland’s most successful band with more than 7 million albums & singles sold worldwide, 1 silver award, 11 gold awards and 30 platinum awards and its no wonder. Their music has quite a kick compared to most bands of similar genre.

I discovered Nightwish approx 2 years ago and was quite impressed by the former singer Tarja Turunen, her voice I feel was perfect for the bands powerful metal sound. Tarja’s voice is amazing and in my opinion has a real pure Gothic sound to it unlike any other progressive metal female band singers.

I was quite sad when Tarja left the band Nighwish and although there is much conspiracy surrounding the why’s and what’s or blaming, its really beside the point. Tarja’s contribution will always live on and I’m sure many people will discover Nightwish in its original form and just be captivated by Tarja’s voice. Nevertheless, the good thing is that the other band members are still in place and they too have a lot of talent. As long as the band continues to stay together then great results will always come about with new album releases.

Nightwish’s recent album as featured on this post “Darl Passion Play” has grown on me a fair bit, and their new lead singer Anette Olzon has been quite a good choice I feel for the replacement of previous lead singer Tarja. Anette’s voice is nowhere near operatic like Tarja’s and her style is quite different but she is still a great performer and vocalist. The more I listen to the album Dark Passion Play the more I like it. Songs I like on the album include Sahara, Master Passion Greed, Bye Bye Beautiful, Amaranth and Whoever Brings The Night.

Nightwish’s song Bye Bye Beautiful to some degree is quite sad in way, and although the song is fantastic, it’s obvious that the band decided to create the song as an out burst of anger towards recent lead singer and band member Tarja. Bye Bye Beautiful is quite an angry sounding song which I feel was something Nightwish needed to get off its chest after so many rumors and speculations about the bands decision to expel Tarja’s or rather might be Tarja’s decision to leave. Whatever the reason, Nightwish is a constantly growing and evolving band and their recent song Whoever Brings The Night gives me the impression that Nightwish is beginning to experiment with different forms of progressive metal. Good on them, I’ll be certainly keeping an eye out on their developments and will continue to follow their progress with interest.
